Torunn L. Tryggestad (@TLTryggestad) is an expert on gender, conflict and peacebuilding. She is deputy director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (@PRIOresearch) and has headed PRIO’s Centre on Gender, Peace and Security since 2015.
Torunn’s work has helped position PRIO as a leading research environment on gender, peace and security. Her expertise in UN peacebuilding, peace operations institutions and implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security was recognized when the UN Secretary General appointed her to the Advisory Group of the UN Peacebuilding Fund.
She has extensive experience from teaching, training and providing policy advice to Norwegian ministries, the Armed Forces and the justice sector. She had a central role in High-Level Seminars on Gender and Inclusive Mediation Processes, with the UN Department of Political Affairs and the Crisis Management Initiative.
Torunn has worked as a researcher and project leader at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, working on UN peacekeeping and peacekeeping capacity-building in Africa. For a year she was an advisor with the UN Section at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She was one of the principal authors of the first Norwegian National Action Plan on the Implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (2006).
In addition to academic work, Torunn has organized events on such themes as “How to Combat Sexual Violence in Conflict,” “Securing Health Care of Hidden Populations: The case of Children Born of War,” and “How does international criminal prosecution of conflict-related sexual violence impact peacebuilding?”
She speaks fluent Norwegian and English, basic German, and can understand and communicate well in Scandinavian languages such as Danish and Swedish. Torunn has taken PRIO’s media training course and has been featured on such radio and TV programs as Dagsnytt 18, Nyhetsmorgen and Urix.
