Luz Méndez

President of Executive Board

Luz Méndez is the President of the Executive Board of Unión Nacional de Mujeres Guatemaltecas, and has been an active member of the women’s movement in Guatemala. She has worked for justice and reparations for women survivors of sexual violence during Guatemala’s civil war, and has researched and written several books on the subject. Luz took part in the Guatemalan peace negotiations that ended the armed conflict, as part of the Political-Diplomatic Team of Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca.

Internationally, she has been involved in efforts to include women in peace negotiations, such as the Arusha Peace and Reconciliation Agreement in Burundi. She was part of the United Nations High Level Advisory Group and speaker for the Global Study on the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1325, on women, peace and security. She is also a member of the Global Fund for Women’s advisory group.

Luz Méndez holds a master’s degree in public administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and a BA in Public Administration from Mariano Gálvez University in Guatemala.
