Lawyer Idayat Hassan (@HassanIdayat) is an expert on West Africa. She is a non-resident Senior Associate in the Africa Program of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (@CSIS), a non-profit policy research organization based in Washington.

She is former director of the Centre for Democracy and Development, a think tank based in Abuja, Nigeria. She oversaw its rise from unranked in 2013 to ranked 11th out of 94 think tanks in sub-Saharan Africa in 2020, according to the University of Pennsylvania’s Global Go To Think Tank Index.

She frequently provides expertise on West Africa and analysis on electoral politics to international and local media. Her specialties span democracy, accountability, peace and security, transitional justice and information and communications technology for development in West Africa.

Idayat is a national commissioner on the Nigerian National Human Rights Commission and a member of the National Peace Committee, an NGO comprised of prominent citizens committed to maintaining peace during Nigeria’s election period.

Idayat was previously a Deputy Regional Coordinator with the Movement Against Corruption, aimed at eradicating corruption and poverty in Nigeria.

A project she led at the Centre for Democracy and Development analyzed the nexus between social media platforms, election processes, and electoral outcomes, using an app to identify electoral fraud and documenting the use of personal data in political campaigning in Nigeria.

She has held fellowships in several universities in Europe and the United States.
