Biography
Joanne is an anthropologist by training and thought leader on the intersection of gender, natural resource management and conflict. As Executive Director of IMPACT (formerly Partnership Africa Canada), Joanne oversees the NGO's work on natural resource governance in areas where human rights and security are at risk such as Africa's Great Lakes Region & West Africa. Responsible sourcing, supply chain transparency, data sovereignty and artisanal mining/trade involving high-value commodities such as 'blood' diamonds, 'conflict' gold, coltan and cobalt & their gendered implications have been a large focus of her work in recent years. This work includes considerations of the gendered implications of enforcement and verification mechanisms intended address illegal trade and illicit financial flows. IMPACT supports women in artisanal mining communities to participate more fully in local governance structures and to assume leadership roles in environmental stewardship and conflict mitigation.
