Biography

Aishatu Alhaji Kabu (known as Aishatu Kabu Damboa) grew up in Damboa, Borno State, Nigeria. In 2014, Boko Haram attacked her community, forcing her family to flee to Maiduguri as internally displaced persons. At 17, she was pulled out of school and married off. But Aishatu found her way back to education, and she never forgot the girls who hadn't.

While volunteering with Plan International in IDP camps, she kept seeing daughters at home, without uniforms, without books. That conviction became ZEGCAWIS, Zenith of the Girl Child and Women Initiative Support, founded in 2016 when she was just 19, with no funding and no office, only purpose.

Today, ZEGCAWIS works across Borno State supporting displaced girls, survivors of violence, and girls who simply need someone to believe in them. The organisation distributes sanitary pads and runs school clubs that break the silence around menstruation, because many girls in Borno miss three to five school days every month due to lack of supplies and stigma. Through partnerships with Ipas (International Projects Assistance Services), GIZ, and the EU, ZEGCAWIS also tackles gender-based violence, child marriage, and FGM.

Her work has been recognised by the Malala Fund, and in 2021 she was selected for the Nobel Women's Initiative Sister to Sister Mentorship Program alongside 15 young feminists from 11 countries. In 2026, she spoke at TEDxMaiduguri as a girl from Damboa who was once displaced.

Her goal is 12 years of uninterrupted education for every girl in Borno, sustained by a social enterprise that frees ZEGCAWIS from donor dependency.

"If my pain can become purpose for another girl, then it is worth it."
