Biography
Jennifer M. Piscopo is Professor of Gender and Politics and Director of the Gender Institute at Royal Holloway University of London. Her research focuses on women’s political representation and gender and elections in Latin America, the United States, and the globe.
Fluent in English and Spanish, she comments on U.S. politics, Latin American politics, and gender and politics for media outlets worldwide. Jennifer also consults regularly for international organizations, such as UN Women and United Cities, and local and national governments.
Jennifer is a leading expert on the adoption, design, and implementation of electoral gender quotas– laws that require political parties to run certain proportions of women candidates. She studies when political parties nominate women, when and why women run for office, and how having women in office matters for gender equality. Her recent work tackles women’s leadership during crisis response and recovery.
Jennifer co-edits the European Journal of Politics and Gender and was co-editor of The Impact of Gender Quotas (Oxford University Press, 2012). She has published in over 30 peer-reviewed journals. Her opinion pieces and analysis have appeared The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, and Ms. Magazine, and more.
Jennifer has received research awards from the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics, the American Political Science Association, the Midwest Political Science Association, the International Political Science Association, and the Latin American Studies Association. She received her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, San Diego in 2011, where she was a Visiting Fellow at the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies from 2009-2010. She was the 2016-2017 Peggy Rockefeller Visiting Scholar at the David Rockefeller Center of Latin American Studies at Harvard University.
A Gates Cambridge Scholar, she received her M.Phil. in Latin American Studies with distinction from the University of Cambridge in 2003. She graduated with top honors from Wellesley College in 2002.
